Get beyond the headlines and hear the first-person stories of immigrants in our community and beyond.
At this program, we’ll explore the recently released book Detained: A Boy's Journal of Survival and Resilience, the first-ever memoir of a child's experience in detention at the US/Mexico border. The book's co-author, Gerardo Iván Morales, met 13-year-old D Esperanza while the teen was in detention, and he helped craft the boy's journal into this memoir. (Morales will join us via Zoom.) Timely, powerful, and unforgettable, Detained brings the border crisis to vivid life.
We will also hear the first-person stories of some of Champaign-Urbana’s own diverse and vibrant immigrant communities. Join us to learn more and to build community understanding and connection one story at a time.
"When I tell my story, I always remind myself that I shouldn’t forget where I come from, I shouldn’t forget about where I started, I shouldn’t forget how far I’ve come." (Immigrant Stories / World TV)
(Please note that attendees will exit this program through the Elm Street doors since the event will end after the Library's closing time.)
