Monthly drop-in crafts for adults.
You know you want to get creative and hang out with friendly people, so stop by the Library for this monthly drop-in crafts program for adults! Meet your neighbors and go home with something beautiful.
This month, our guest is Lori Martinsek from Illini Country Stitchers. Lori is a maker who loves hand and machine sewing and quilting; she began embroidering and sewing at a young age and continues to make art quilts. You'll be learning the art of sashiko stitching and boro patching. Boro (created through the process of sashiko stitching) originated in 17th-century Japan out of necessity to mend and extend the life of garments. Boro patches may be strategically placed to create a pleasing design; the original purpose was to patch holes and reinforce the cloth of a worn garment.
During this program, you'll practice sewing techniques on a small project you can bring home; supplies will be provided to make a mug rug (aka an oversized coaster for your hot drinks). Using heavy cotton thread and simple stitching, small fabric scraps can be layered to make slow-stitched projects. Once you get the hang of it, you can use sashiko stitching to create boro patches on anything you'd like!
