Learn how to make rock candy in this fun Jump Into Science event!
Have fun with science in this Jump Into Science series presented by the Graduate Society of Women Engineers at the U of I in collaboration with The Urbana Free Library. Participants will learn how to make rock candy!
Participants who register can get a kit at The Urbana Free Library (available starting February 15th), and join the Zoom meeting on February 19th at noon. Registrants will receive their Zoom link on the day of the program.
Come inside the Library to pick up your kit at the Circulation Desk on the 1st Floor, or you can call 217-367-4057 to schedule a Curbside Pickup. Just ask for the Jump Into Science: Crystallization Kit.
If you register and you are put on the waiting list, you can still join the program (Zoom link will be sent out just before the program), but you will have to get your own materials since all kits are reserved for registrants not on the waiting list.
You will need the following items that are in the kit: 3 cups of sugar, 6 TBS Epsom Salt, food coloring, and 1 skewer.
In addition to the kit, you will need: 1 cookie sheet or glass pan, 2 cups of hot water, 1 clothespin, 1 large saucepan, and 1 jar or glass (small). If you don't have a clothespin, a pencil and string will work, too.
Thank you to the Graduate Society of Women Engineers (GradSWE) for partnering with The Urbana Free Library to make this program possible. Engineers and scientists contribute to the betterment of society by identifying and solving technical problems, and GradSWE advocates for women in graduate education so that they can confidently excel at the frontier of scientific advancement.
