Join Dr. Shelly Viola Murphy for a lecture on African American genealogy.
Researching African American relatives can present a number of challenges. Dr. Shelly Viola Murphy is the Descendant Project Researcher in the Division for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at the University of Virginia. She researches the laborers who built the University.
Dr. Murphy is a nationally recognized genealogist who has been performing research for over 30 years. She is the founder of familytreegirl.com and known for her “SO WHAT” approach to genealogical research. Dr. Murphy is the president, coordinator, and instructor for the Midwest African American Genealogy Institute (MAAGI) and active speaker at many of the regional and state genealogy conferences. Most recently, she has been working to develop staff and public educational programs for the Center for Family History at the International African American Museum opening this fall.
