Join Jada Fulcher, editor-in-chief of the Lavender Newsletter, to learn about the new Queer newsletter and its predecessor from the 80s and 90s, the Lavender Prairie News.
The best part of Queerness is understanding the way the world changes and how we change with it. Art isn't created in a vacuum and everything we do is an artifact of the time it was created in. There is so much Queer history from our pasts that continue to inspire us, just as The Lavender Prairie News inspired The Lavender Newsletter, but it doesn't always represent who we are now. "Reinventing Classic Queer Media" invites us to take what we love about our Queer history and reimagine it for the world we see today. We'll look specifically at the ways The Lavender Prairie News inspired The Lavender Newsletter, and then branch out to reimagining how our favorite parts of Queer history can come alive as our Queer futures.
Jada Fulcher (she/they) is the editor-in-chief of The Lavender Newsletter, which is a newly created Queer newsletter based in Champaign-Urbana. In her personal writing, they seek to expand upon the expansiveness of Queer identity and gender expression in Black folks. In her work at The Lavender she hopes to uplift the voices of Queer Midwesterners who are often left out of the image of American Queerness.
This event is co-sponsored by Uniting Pride of Champaign County.
Conveniently located at the corner of Race and Green in downtown Urbana.
