What happened to the American Civil War Loyalists and Patriots?
As families chose sides, patriot or loyalist, their descendants sent ripples across generations. Many who remained loyal to the British Crown found refuge in what would become Canada, communities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Upper Canada. Others remained in the newly formed United States of America, fighting for independence. How do we trace those stories today?
Hailing from Southwestern Ontario, Kathryn Lake Hogan, a professional genealogist, educator, and speaker specializing in Canadian family history, is the descendant of five loyalists. She’s the founder of Looking4Ancestors and is known for making genealogy approachable, engaging, and, dare we say, fun! Kathryn teaches on a variety of topics, including Loyalist ancestry, immigration, and migration patterns. She has presented at major organizations, including RootsTech, Legacy Family Tree Webinars, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), and the GRIP Genealogy Institute.
