Local history meets genealogy in an exploration of the life of Arnold "Dutch" Young and the beginning of the Eastern Illinois Baseball League.
Glen Young has been chronicling his family history for several years, with the ambitious goal of uncovering the lives of each generation in a way that captures their experiences and preserves their legacy. This talk will delve into one specific ancestor, Arnold "Dutch" Young, baseball player-manager. Young was the only individual to compete in the first 14 seasons of the Eastern Illinois (EI) baseball league. This talk will provide compelling insights into the league’s deep ties to local communities from its founding until Young's life was tragically cut short by polio in 1949. Glen’s research draws on historical records, vintage newspapers, and personal archives to gain insights into the inception and evolution of the EI league—its influential characters, memorable highlights, and profound tragedies.
